The Mexican Open-Acapulco Mexico

mexican-open-acapulco-Arena GNP Seguros-flag-courtesy-robert-broughton

A First Hand View from Arena GNP Seguros

Bob Broughton
http://broughton.ca
Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico

Monday night was the start of my fourth trip to the Mexican Open. In the
course of those visits, the courts have changed from clay to hard, and
this year, the tournament moved to a brand new stadium, also in the
Diamante area of Acapulco.

mexican-open-acapulco-Arena GNP Seguros-courtesy-robert-broughton

My seat was in the nosebleed section. The stadium has four elevators,
but only two of them were in operation, and, of course, they were the
ones on the opposite side of the stadium. There were some minor crowd
management issues (one of which I’ll address later), but things went
smoothly for a new event in a new facility.

mexican-open-acapulco-Arena GNP Seguros-exterior-courtesy-robert-broughton

There’s one more major difference. In past years, I have seen Maria
Sharapova and Bianca Andreescu play in this tournament.

That is now a thing of the past. Starting last year, they separated the men’s and
women’s tournament, with the women’s tournament playing in Guadalajara.
The year, the two tournaments are playing in the same week.

mexican-open-acapulco-Arena GNP Seguros-court-courtesy-robert-broughton

My seat is in the Cinemex Terrace. It has movie theatre-style seats, and
food and beverages are included. Only problem is, the only beer they
have is Ultra, which is one of the tournament sponsors. Well, it was
cold, anyway.

The night’s first match was John Isner (US) vs. Fernando Verdasco
(Spain). Isner won the first set 7-5. He was up a break in the second
set, and appeared to be on his way to a win. When Verdasco was serving
at 3-5 and ad-out (match point), one of the ushers got the idea from
somewhere that there was a change-over, and the match had to be stopped
while a crowd of people came in and slowly went to their sears.
Fortunately for Verdasco, he won the point and stayed in the match.
Then, there was a medical timeout, and I thought that this would be a
good time to move to Court 1, and watch the only doubles match of the
evening.

It turned out that Verdasco won the second set in a tie-breaker, and
Isner won the third set with another tie-breaker; the match lasted over
three hours.

The doubles match was Feliciano Lopez (Spain) and Stefanos Tsitsipas
(Greece) vs. two New Zealanders, John-Patrick Smith and Luke Saville.
Smith seems to have been on the pro tour forever. I missed what was left
of the first set, won by Tsitsipas/Lopez in a 9-7 tie-breaker, because
all of the seats were occupied, so they weren’t letting people in until
some seats were vacated. Anyway, Tsitsipas has a fan base here, but even
without that, this was a very entertaining doubles match, and the crowd
really got into it. If I remember correctly, there were no service
breaks until Smith/Saville were serving at 4-5. They got into a 0-40
hole, which, in no-ad scoring, means four match points. Smith/Saville
canceled three of them, so the deciding point, won by Tsitsipas/Lopez,
was also set and match point.

So, when I returned to centre court, Stefan Kozlov (US) vs. Grigor
Dimitrov (Bulgaria) was still in the first set. In all my years of
watching tennis, I have never seen anything like Kozlov’s performance.
Kozlov, a “lucky loser” entry, won the first set in a 10-8 tiebreaker.
He got a service break in the second set, and was up 5-3 and getting
ready to serve for the match. Then, he got a really bad cramp. He was
incapable of walking for several minutes. When he starting serving the
next game, he was not only limping badly, his serves were barely
cracking 90 km./hour, and landing in the middle of the service court. If
this had been a boxing match, it would have been stopped. However,
Kozlov believed that if he stayed on the court, he could play his way
out of the cramp. He was right. To no one’s surprise, Dimitrov won the
next four games and the second set. However, Kozlov managed to hold
serve to start the third set, and continued to get better as the set
progressed. He continued to hold serve to 4-4, then broke serve and
served it out to win it. This matched lasted three hours and 21 minutes,
the longest match in tournament history.

And that wasn’t all. The final match of the evening was #2 seed
Alexander Zverev (Germany) vs. Jenson Brooksby (USA). (The players
entered the court at 1:25 AM.) Zverev showed the artistry that he is
known for, but, following the pattern of the rest of the evening,
Brooksby broke serve late in the set, and won it 6-3. And a *lot *of
jaws dropped. By this time, it was well past my bedtime, and I had to
leave. As I did so, I figured out that I shouldn’t say, “hasta manaña”
to my Guanajuato companions, because it was already “manaña”, so I said,
“hasta catorce horas” instead.

Well, that match went three sets, too. The second set was decided by a
12-10 tie-breaker, and Brooksby had two match points that he didn’t
cash. Zverev won the thirdset and the match 6-2. This one took three
hours and 20 minutes, and wasn’t over until 4:55 AM. That is a record
for the latest-ever finish.

There is a total absence of Canadians in this tournament, now unusual in
this day and age. Mexicans are few and far between. Santiago Gonzalez is
in the doubles draw. Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela, who plays tonight, is
also in the doubles draw, lost in the first round of qualifying, but got
in as a “lucky.

Visiting Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club Australia during the Grand Slam

The former home of the Australian Open

It’s known as the ‘Spiritual Home of Tennis in Australia’

Kooyong Tennis Club in Melbourne has been one of Australia’s, and the world’s most outstanding tennis clubs for well over a century.

It’s been here in some form or another since 1892

Ben Corby from Kooyong Tennis Club tells us, “So we have 26 grass courts, 26 all-weather clay courts, as well as three plexi-cushion courts which are inside our Kooyong Stadium. Members-wise we have over 9,500 members so it’s one of the biggest tennis clubs in Australia”

Kooyong Tennis Club with its 52 courts is one of the must-see, must play clubs in the world

“We used to host the Australian Open here until 1977 before it moved across to Melbourne Park as we know it now. Since the Australian Open moved we undertook the Kooyong Classic which is an exhibition tournament that runs every year. It’s in the week of the lead-up to the Australian Open. Some of the best players come to tune up their game before the Australian Open before they take on their opponents.

tennis-tourist-kooyong-tennis-club-grass-court-flowers-teri-church

Kooyong was the home of the Australian Open which was then played on grass. Now the Open is played down the road at Rod Laver and Kooyong with its 51 courts is one of the must-see/must play tennis clubs in the world.”

tennis-tourist-kooyong-tennis-coaching-session-teri-church
On the way to our coaching session

We arranged a coaching session with one of the coaches here

tennis-tourist-kooyong-tennis-club-drills-teri-church

The grass courts are only open on the weekends, so we had to settle for clay. The coach took us out to the clay courts and we spent an hour with him going through some drills and had a lot of fun. He taught us a few Aussie tricks.

Ben says “So if you’re having coaching with us the coaching academy is open to everyone. “

tennis-tourist-kooyong-tennis-club-drill-session-teri-church

“There’s about a three-year waitlist currently to become a member of this club which gets you what they called restricted membership which is access to the clay courts only. Then for a full membership which allows you to play on the grass, about another 6 years after that. “

tennis-tourist-kooyong-tennis-club-house-teri-church

“We have a fully stocked gym pool saunas for recovery as well a restaurant and bar upstairs for post-match food and drink. And a full coaching program and tennis academy has around 20 coaches. “

It’s a special experience playing here at Kooyong

From the moment you drive up and see the trophy case in the lobby with all the magnificent trophies and come out onto the grass courts.

tennis-tourist-kooyong-tennis-club-trophies-teri-church
tennis-tourist-kooyong-tennis-club-museum-teri-church

Ben says “You know just having the grass courts is something that is quite rare. There are not too many courts around the world compared to the number of clubs that are able to have grass courts, certainly ones that are kept in such good condition by the team. You’ve got your Wimbledons and things but this is very close. And that is one of the highlights of being a member and being able to play at Kooyong.”

Tennis in a World Heritage Site in Melbourne Australia

Carlton Gardens Tennis Club Melbourne Australia

Set in a beautiful historic park that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Carlton Gardens Tennis Club has four LED-floodlit artificial-grass courts under huge elm and oak trees. The heritage clubhouse has been fully renovated and has change rooms, a kitchen and a BBQ area.

The courts are open to the public through a book-a-court system which unlocks the gates and turns on the lights automatically if needed when a PIN is entered.

One of Melbourne’s oldest tennis clubs with a rich history

Club member Tom Keel tells us “It used to be called the Italian Tennis Club. This area is where all the Italian migrants came and settled after the war. For a long time you had to be Italian to play here. And then about 30 years ago they decided to move out to the suburbs for bigger housing and the place was left empty. A couple of the locals came in and reinvigorated it. “

Carlton Gardens is located near the center of Melbourne in a historic park

The club is situated in the Royal Carlton Gardens within walking distance of Melbourne’s Central Business District. Carlton Gardens and The Royal Exhibition Building are designated as a World Heritage Site and when you visit you will understand why. The grandeur of the gardens and the architecture of the exhibition hall are evident.

Carlton Gardens is one of only two World Heritage Sites in Australia

The other one is the Sydney Opera House. The reason for the designation the club tells us is “there is an old building from 1880 which is the last remaining exhibition house of its type in the world. Back when trade was really kicking along, Melbourne was the richest city in the world because of their gold rush, similar to the timing of the California Gold Rush. With all the influx of money they built the Royal Exhibition Hall which at the time covered the whole park. It was enormous and they had a million visitors from around the world. “

The Gardens are Magnificent

The gardens are laid out to be observed from the top of the dome, which is based on the dome in Venice. Club members say they do find themselves a little bit limited because the world heritage stops them from changing anything in the building or their size so they stay with four courts. But they acknowledge they are very lucky because they wouldn’t allow this to be built now. The fact that it’s here and it’s protected means tennis players and others can enjoy these beautiful surroundings for many years to come.

tennis-tourist-carlton-gardens-melbourne-australia-teri-church

Carlton Gardens is a tennis club with membership but it’s also open to the public

They have the book a court system so anyone with access to the internet can jump online pick a day, pick a court, pick a time pay with a credit card and just turn up. The lights come on automatically. The gate opens with a pin. So it’s open to all people. About a thousand people use the court through the book a court system.

tennis-tourist-carlton-gardens-tennis-club-court-melbourne-australia-serene-teri-church

They call their Surface Mod Grass or Fake grass

“It’s a concrete base with a rubber mat and we have this grass over it. We put some sand across it to allow a little bit of sliding as well. It’s low maintenance with all the water restrictions we had 10 years ago we were all told don’t put anything that requires water in. So we’re all green-powered as well so we can play at night without any feelings of guilt”

tennis-tourist-carlton-gardens-tennis-club-courts-melbourne-australia-teri-church

The Club Works Hard to Be Sustainable both Environmentally and Socially

Specifically designed coaching for disadvantaged kids on the weekend, women’s only nights where the government gives them money to encourage women to come to a safe environment. They have redone all of their park lighting to make it safe for people to walk through the park. They’ve adopted the 17 pillars of sustainability UNESCO charter so they make sure they’re the most sustainable club we can be. Part of that was sourcing all of their power from renewables. They also consider gender equality on their committee and they have free sessions. They have homeless people coming to play and provide them with all of their equipment. “

We challenged their Club to a Fun Tournament on Australia Day

We visited the Carlton Gardens Tennis Club while in Melbourne for the Australian Open. We’re from Canada and we challenged them to a Canada vs Australia tournament on January 26th which is their national holiday. They agreed and proved to be amazing hosts. After some lively doubles we awarded the title to our hosts and they fired up the ‘barbie’ as they call it to show us their Australian hospitality.

tennis-tourist-carlton-gardens-tennis-club-melbourne-australia-canadian-group-teri-church
tennis-tourist-carlton-gardens-tennis-club-court-melbourne-australia-club-bbq-flag-teri-church

Tom says “It was nicely matched. Everyone was on their best behavior. I think the competition was fierce but friendly and as usual people come along with the right attitude to have a good time, but also a little bit of white line fever and people really do try to run down the balls. We appreciate that you flew all the way out here just to play us. By the way, while you’re here there’s an Australian Open on down here. You might like to check that out as well.”

tennis-tourist-carlton-gardens-tennis-club-teams-melbourne-australia-teri-church

And on a more serious note, he says “It’s fantastic the Australian Open. We notice of course a spike in attendance at this time of year.”

It’s clear for me to see now that we’re here at Carlton Gardens what passion Australians have for tennis and how that translates to great performance on courts around the world.

“We had a great day here at Carlton Gardens Lawn and Tennis Club. Had some really fun matches, met a lot of new friends and we’ll always remember the tennis club here. So when in Melbourne Australia, definitely check out the Carlton Gardens Tennis Club, and don’t forget to pack your racquet.”

Tennis at Rancho Las Palmas near Palm Springs

Rancho Las Palmas Has it All

Tennis at Rancho Las Palmas. We’d signed up to take in the Monday morning Adult tennis clinic at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort. Located in Ranch Mirage, in the Palm Springs area of California, the tennis program  is run by Cliff Drysdale Tennis Management. The 24 state-of-the-art courts are situated in the middle of a beautiful palm tree lined golf course, with the towering  San Jacinto mountains in the background.

When we drove up to the security check-in at the resort, the staff was very welcoming, providing us with a parking pass and direction to the courts. The golf pro-shop and tennis club are in the same facility. It wasn’t hard finding our way to the courts, as we followed the contingent of fellow tennis warriors migrating from the parking lot. We’re all up early to take advantage of the cool morning.

tennis-tourist-Rancho-Las-Palmas-Palm-Springs-tennis-players-clubhouse-teri-church

The the reception center at the tennis facility overlooks the courts where you can relax, before or after the game. There’s usually a group on the show-court and it’s fun to watch the locals locked in a match with some friendly banter.

It can be warm in the desert even in late October, which may discourage some, but an advantage to those of us who end up with a smaller group at today’s clinic. At the reception desk in the Pro shop Eliot Pegg , the Director of Tennis, gave us a warm welcome. After introductions we shared some tennis stories and discussed the arrangements for the morning. After the clinic Teri and I will be shooting a Tennis Tourist Video with Elliot and Rob Wright, the Head Tennis Professional, so we need to set things up for that.  Then it’s time for the Daily Tennis Clinic. Today the focus is on ground strokes, but since there are only two of us, we get to work a bit on our net-game as well. Elliot really put us to the test, running lots of fun drills and challenging us at the same time.

Coming to a resort like Rancho Las Palmas really is like tennis heaven. The scenery is phenomenal, the weather perfect, the tennis courts outstanding and the people so welcoming. In my next blog, I’ll share what we learned about the tennis programs offered , as well as some of the many activities you will find at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort and Spa .
